It all really depends on how spartan you would like to go. For instance, the place that I like the best for me travelling alone is specifically room #7 at the Casa de Sans Souci, it's the room that overlooks Cabarete Bay on the second floor. It is somewhat spartan in many respects, a ceiling fan directly above a big bed (with a somewhat thinnish mattress), simple furniture including two chairs, a small table, a tiny kitchenette with a refrigerator, and a bathroom that was adequate (sometimes there was no hot water). All this for $30/day! The best part was waking and falling asleep to the small shorebreak 75 feet away! The last place I stayed at, The Palm Beach Hotel, was really the nicest, but only as far as amenities are concerned. The kitchen was fully stocked, complete with a fruit basket, the air conditioning was wonderful (not needed in the wintertime!), and all the other features of the room were great. Although I was staying in the adjoining building across from the main building directly on the beach, Richard Amoils (on our list) was staying in the main area of the condominiums with his family, and overlooked the beach and garden area, complete with a small but decent sized pool. I think the room I was staying in retails at Vela for about $90/night. Carl on the other hand, stays at the Albatros Hotel, and I've stayed there many times, too (but not recently). It's a little off the main road, about 200 yards from the edge of town and set back from the street (often quiet!). There's no ocean view, but they do have a nice pool, and the rooms are quite adequate. Carl likes the place because he can cut a nice deal and stays for an entire month. The best place I've stayed at was the Sun & Surf hotel, but it was a special deal about 5 years ago. Great room, A/C, Cable, full buffet breakfast, pool but no view for $25/night! I don't think you can come by this deal anytime soon, but it was fun while it lasted in the summer of 1997. Overall, I think your best bet, is to email Vela in Cabarete directly at: vela.cabarete@codetel.net.do Just let them know specifically what dates you have in mind, and they'll set you up, complete with an equipment package. Address your inquiry to Udo Jansen and tell him that I sent you!
