SAN FRANCISCO BOARDSAILING ASSOCIATION

Send us your thoughts! email:
"It's a beautiful Bay, don't let it get away" Bono/U2 ;)

1. CANNOT IMAGINE. Windsurfing on the Peninsula faces possible
extinction at the hands of SF and SFO. We will fight them like they
cannot imagine. Because this is our home, and the Bay that they want
to destroy is one of the reasons we all came here in the first place.

2. IMPACT. To help us, read this eNewsletter and pass it on to your
friends. When there's a chance to get involved, please do. To find
out about more frequent opportunities to make an impact (such as by
writing emails to protect access across the Bay Area), subscribe to
the more frequent email list: SFBAeNetwork, by sending any email to:
SFBAeNetwork-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

3. NOT HOW IT SHOULD BE. As many of you already know, on New Years
Eve, legendary Crissy Field figure Bill Abeel was killed by a hit and
run driver. He was 82 and looking forward to another season of
windsurfing. American Windsurfer, Vol. 8 Ish. 2, page 34 (with
photo): "The wife of a San Francisco newspaper reporter saw the event
and described the distinct moment when she saw Bill's soul leave his
body while in mid air after being hit by the speeding car."

report: http://sfba.org/crissy.htm

5. WHEELBARROWS ANYONE? Join us for the Third Avenue Clean Up Day!
Saturday April 28 9AM - 11:30AM. If you sail Third Avenue, come help
us improve access to the water, clean debris from the Bay, and
improve the rigging area. Get ready to get dirty. Wear old shoes &
clothes, and bring shovels, buckets, and if you can bring a
wheelbarrow, let Jay Runge know: jay@margi.com

6. PROFESSOR WINDRIDER'S WEBSITE: Be sure to bookmark this webpage to
keep on top of what's up on the SFO front: http://protectourbay.com/

7. EAST BAY ACCESS OPPORTUNITY. See Jim McGrath's update:
http://sfba.org/eastbay.htm

8. HUMPHREY MATTERS. Excerpted from the March 1, 2001 SF
Chronicle: `Those gray whales that delighted us as they swam near the
Dumbarton Bridge this week are a mystery to oceanographic scientists -
- and they're a Red flag for plans to build two new runways at San
Francisco International Airport. The decision could have a meaningful
effect on the whales, Along with everything else that lives in the
bay or relies on it for food or habitat. "Certainly, an increased
filling of the bay is not going to be positive for the whales that
come in there and other animals that come in there now," said
[Russell] Tenofsky [of the Oceanic Society].' If you see a whale in
the Bay, call (415) 409-GRAY.

9. NEW WIND IN SF?. Each newly elected San Francisco Supervisor has
publicly stated skepticism about SFO's runway expansion plan, many
expressing outright opposition and pushing for alternatives.

10. SFBA BOARD MEETING. SFBA Board of Directors will meet May 3 at
7:30PM at the Saint Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. Members are
welcome.
